Design a biomimetic disc using geometric features of the claws CIGR Journal
Dehghan Hesar, Hadi; Kalantari, Davood.
This study presents a numerical investigation regarding the stress distribution on the new designed disc harrow using the ANSYS software. A conventional disc, notched disc, and a biomimetic design inspired by the claw of the leatherwing were analyzed in two conventional plowed and unplowed soils and three tillage depths (4, 7 and 10 cm). Stress analysis for all treatments showed that the highest stress was imposed at the disc-stem junction. Meanwhile the highest deformation occurred at the lowest and the most external part of the discs (land line). The results obtained in this study indicated that the maximum stress exerted from tilling soil to discs increases linearly with tillage depth in both plowed and unplowed soils. Given these results, the maximum...

Determination of photosynthetic pigments in fleabane biotypes susceptible and resistant to the Herbicide Glyphosate Planta Daninha
Kaspary,T.E.; Lamego,F.P.; Cutti,L.; Aguiar,A.C.M.; Bellé,C..
Chlorophylls and carotenoids are the main photosynthetic pigment in plants. In the weeds, the greatest amount of photosynthetic pigments can result in high competitiveness of the species. The aim of this study was to quantify the content of photosynthetic pigments in biotypes of fleabane (Conyza bonariensis) susceptible and resistant to glyphosate, by two different methods, as well as a correlation between chlorophyll content obtained by portable and classical methodology (extractable chlorophyll). An experiment was conducted in greenhouse and laboratory, 2 x 5 factorial scheme, where factor A was equivalent to biotypes of fleabane (resistant and susceptible to glyphosate) and factor B to developmental stages plants (rosette vegetative I, II and III and...

Development of mango wilt in mango cultivars submitted to salt stress Bragantia
Vieccelli,Juliana Cristina; Araujo,Leonardo; Lopes,Ueder Pedro; Siqueira,Dalmo Lopes de; Rodrigues,Fabrício de Ávila.
ABSTRACT Mango wilt, caused by Ceratocystis fimbriata, is one of the most important diseases affecting mango yield worldwide. Salt stress can affect host defense responses against pathogens infection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the development of mango wilt in 2 mango cultivars submitted to salt stress. Mango plants from cultivars Tommy Atkins and Ubá, considered to be moderately resistant and resistant to mango wilt, respectively, were grown in plastic pots which contained 20 kg of washed sand and daily irrigated with 3 L of a modified Hoagland solution during 40 days before being submitted to salinization. For this process of salinization, the plants received nutrient solution containing 0, 30, 60, and 90 mmol∙L–1 of sodium chloride (NaCl)...

Development of virus resistant transgenic papayas expressing the coat protein gene from a Brazilian isolate of Papaya ringspot virus Trop. Plant Pathol.
Souza Júnior,Manoel T.; Nickel,Osmar; Gonsalves,Dennis.
Translatable and nontranslatable versions of the coat protein (cp) gene of a Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) isolate collected in the state of Bahia, Brazil, were engineered for expression in Sunrise and Sunset Solo varieties of papaya (Carica papaya). The biolistic system was used to transform secondary somatic embryo cultures derived from immature zygotic embryos. Fifty-four transgenic lines, 26 translatable and 28 nontranslatable gene versions, were regenerated, with a transformation efficiency of 2.7%. Inoculation of cloned R0 plants with PRSV BR, PRSV HA or PRSV TH, Brazilian, Hawaiian and Thai isolates, respectively, revealed lines with mono-, double-, and triple-resistance. After molecular analysis and a preliminary agronomic evaluation, 13 R1 and R2...

Background: As a major threat to the oyster industry, Pacific Oyster Mortality Syndrome (POMS) is a polymicrobial disease affecting the main oyster species farmed across the world. POMS affects oyster juveniles and became panzootic this last decade, but POMS resistance in some oyster genotypes has emerged. While we know some genetic loci associated with resistance, the underlying mechanisms remained uncharacterized. So, we developed a comparative transcriptomic approach using basal gene expression profiles between different oyster biparental families with contrasted phenotypes when confronted to POMS (resistant or susceptible). Results: We showed that POMS resistant oysters show differential expression of genes involved in stress responses, protein...

Disinfectant-resistant bacteria in Buenos Aires city hospital wastewater BJM
Nuñez,L.; Moretton,J..
Large quantities of disinfectants are used in hospitals, externally on human skin or to eliminate microorganisms from inanimate objects. After use, residual quantities of these products reach the wastewater, exposing the bacteria that survive in hospital wastewaters to a wide range of biocides that could act as a selective pressure for the development of resistance. Increasing attention has been directed recently to the resistance of bacteria to disinfectants. The aim of this paper was to determine the disinfectant bacterial resistance pattern of the microflora released to the urban sewer system by hospital effluents. The characterization of the waste water microflora was performed by determination of the CFU of heterotrophic bacteria, fecal indicator...

Distribution of erm genes and low prevalence of inducible resistance to clindamycin among staphylococci isolates BJID
Coutinho,Vivian de Lima Spode; Paiva,Rodrigo Minuto; Reiter,Keli Cristine; de-Paris,Fernanda; Barth,Afonso Luis; Machado,Alice Beatriz Mombach Pinheiro.
INTRODUCTION: Resistance to macrolides, lincosamides and streptogramins B (MLS B antibiotics) in staphylococci may be due to modification in ribosomal target methylase encoded by erm genes. The expression of MLS B resistance lead to three phenotypes, namely constitutive resistance (cMLS B), inducible resistance (iMLS B), and resistance only to macrolides and streptogramins B (MS B). The iMLS B resistance is the most difficult to detect in the clinical laboratory. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the expression of MLS B resistance and the prevalence of the erm genes among 152 clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CNS) from Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre. METHODS: Primary MLS B resistance was detected by...

Do Refuge Requirements for Biotechnology Crops Promote Economic Efficiency? Some Evidence for Bt Cotton AgEcon
Livingston, Michael J.; Storer, Nicholas P.; Van Duyn, John W.; Kennedy, George G..
We examine producer behavior, resistance evolution, and returns under alternative refuge requirements in an eastern North Carolina region with multiple corn, cotton, and soybean fields infested by a mobile pest. Returns are highest, pyrethroid sprays occur least frequently, and pyrethroid resistance evolution is delayed most effectively with no refuge requirement. Complying with the current 20% refuge requirement costs the producer $8.67 per cotton acre, or $34.21 per non-transgenic insecticidal (Bt) cotton acre. Returns are highest under each refuge requirement when one-toxin Bt cotton is not phased out; however, removal of the technology at the earliest phase-out date minimizes regional pyrethroid sprays.

Effect of silicon applied to wheat plants on the biology and probing behaviour of the greenbug Schizaphis graminum (Rond.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) Neotropical Entomology
Goussain,Marcio M.; Prado,Ernesto; Moraes,Jair C..
The effect of silicon-treated wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L.) on the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rond.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) was evaluated. Plants were treated with silicon incorporated to the soil and by foliar spraying. Aphid development was evaluated by observing the duration of the pre-reproductive, reproductive and post-reproductive periods, as well as fecundity and longevity. Probing behaviour was investigated by using the DC electrical penetration graphs (EPG) technique and a "honeydew clock". Silica treated plants had a clear adverse effect on aphid development. Stylet penetration was not affected by treatments showing no physical barriers by the plant tissue. However, stylet was withdrawn more often on plants treated with silica,...

Effect of sulfonylurea tribenuron methyl herbicide on soil Actinobacteria growth and characterization of resistant strains BJM
Rachedi,Kounouz; Zermane,Ferial; Tir,Radja; Ayache,Fatima; Duran,Robert; Lauga,Béatrice; Karama,Solange; Simon,Maryse; Boulahrouf,Abderrahmane.
ABSTRACT Repeated application of pesticides disturbs microbial communities and cause dysfunctions on soil biological processes. Granstar® 75 DF is one of the most used sulfonylurea herbicides on cereal crops; it contains 75% of tribenuron-methyl. Assessing the changes on soil microbiota, particularly on the most abundant bacterial groups, will be a useful approach to determine the impact of Granstar® herbicide. For this purpose, we analyzed Actinobacteria, which are known for their diversity, abundance, and aptitude to resist to xenobiotic substances. Using a selective medium for Actinobacteria, 42 strains were isolated from both untreated and Granstar® treated soils. The number of isolates recovered from the treated agricultural soil was fewer than that...

Effect of the inherent variation in the mineral concentration of alfalfa cultivars on aphid populations Bragantia
Silva,Alexandre de Almeida e; Varanda,Elenice Mouro; Primavesi,Ana Cândida.
Plants have inherent variability of mineral content which affects their physiology and consequently the herbivorous insects feeding on them. Besides, insects need considerable amounts of potassium, phosphorus and magnesium in their diets, whereas little calcium, sodium and chloride are required. In this study, the inherent variation on mineral (Ca, S, Mg, N, P, K and also C:N ratio) concentrations and aphid (Acyrthosiphon spp., Therioaphis maculata, Aphis craccivora) populations on three alfalfa (Medicago sativa) cultivars (P3; Crioula, the most widely cultivated in Brazil, and CUF 101, an aphid-resistant) were studied between September/1997 and August/1998. A significant variation on mineral concentrations and aphid populations was observed among...

Effects of temperature and salinity on the survival rates of coxicerberus ramosae (Albuquerque, 1978), an interstitial isopod of a Sandy Beach on the coast of Brazil BABT
Albuquerque,Elaine Figueiredo; Meurer,Bruno; Netto,Godofredo da Camara Genofre.
The tolerance to the combined effects of temperature and salinity was investigated in the interstitial isopod Coxicerberus ramosae (Albuquerque, 1978), a species of intertidal zone of sandy beaches in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The animals were collected on Praia Vermelha Beach. The experiments lasted 24 h and nine salinities and seven temperatures were used for a total of 63 combinations. Thirty animals were tested in each combination. The species showed high survival in most of the combinations. The temperature of 35 ºC was lethal and at 5 ºC, the animals tolerated only a narrow range of salinities. The statistical analyses showed that the effects of temperature and salinity were significant on the survival, which confirmed the euryhalinity and eurythermy...

Emergence of resistant Candida in neutropenic patients BJID
Nucci,Marcio; Colombo,Arnaldo L..
Problems with resistance to antifungal drugs have emerged due to an increase in the incidence of systemic fungal infections and widespread use of antifungal agents. Accordingly, efforts have been made to develop adequate fungal susceptibility tests. The ideal test should have high intra and inter-laboratory reproducibility, good correlation with the clinical outcome, and should be easy to perform. While no such test has yet been developed, advances have been made. Over the past decade, many reports of fungal resistance have been published, most of them in AIDS patients. Though the frequency of resistant strains is still low in neutropenic cancer patients, and is mostly limited to Candida glabrata and Candida krusei, resistance to Candida albicans has also...

Employing pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles to optimize antimicrobial treatment in the face of emerging resistance BJM
Santos Filho,Lauro; Kuti,Joseph L.; Nicolau,David P..
Antimicrobial efficacy in vivo is not exclusively defined by the activity of an antibiotic as determined in the in vitro susceptibility test. Knowledge of the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of antimicrobials and all phenomena occurring between antimicrobial agents and microorganisms is imperative. The pharmacodynamic (PD) parameters most often used in studies of antibiotic effect include the following relationships: the maximum free concentration (fCmax) to minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ratio, the free area under the curve (fAUC/MIC) ratio and the duration of time the free concentration exceeds the MIC (fT>MIC). Utilization of known pharmacokinetic/ pharmacodynamic surrogate relationships should help to optimize treatment outcome,...
